From April 2024, Labour-run North East Derbyshire District Council have announced they are introducing a £40 annual charge on second green bins, which is already being seen as an affront to rural and village residents across the length and breadth of the District. At a time when Councils are supposed to be encouraging recycling, this completely retrograde move comes just a few months after the new Labour administration at NEDDC backtracked on cross party commitment they had previously signed up to, and which we called for, to extend green waste collections throughout the winter.
We think the introduction of these new charges could be the start of a slippery slope. How long before NEDDC copy their Labour colleagues in Chesterfield Borough and introduce charges on all green waste collections? It will also undoubtedly lead to hidden and wasteful administration costs as well as an increase in fly-tipping and garden fires, which are already a cause of significant complaints. We'll be raising concerns on behalf of residents at the Council meetings. In the meantime, if you feel as strongly as we do then help us send a message to Labour to scrap these new green bin charges and sign our petition here:
